Facilitating Multi-Stakeholder Dialoguing on Oil Related Impacts
Over the years, the exploitation of petroleum resources around the world has left undesirable social and environmental impacts for host communities. Several efforts have been made by government agencies and private investors to ensure a harmonious relationship with host communities as well as to ensure a reduction of the negative impacts on them. A number of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects have been instituted by companies operating in the oil sector. However, feedback from stakeholders suggests discontent in the way these CSR projects have been conceived, designed and implemented. They are concerned that their interests have not been prioritised in these projects. As a result, these projects have proven not to be addressing the felt needs of the citizens. Sadly however, with the absence of a structured mechanism for engagements and dialoguing amongst relevant stakeholders in government institutions and private investors, the delivery of meaningful interventions to ensure peaceful coexistence between the communities and commercial operations has been unsuccessful.
It takes a well-structured and sustained dialogue among the actors to build a common understanding and appreciation of the issues at stake and together work to bring about a solution that all stakeholders identify with.
In collaboration with the Western Region Coastal Foundation (WRCF), COLANDEF is facilitating structured community level conversations in the Ahanta West and Jomoro districts of the Western Region.
It is expected that the consultative process will coordinate conversations on emerging issues from oil and gas activities and provide the basis for building a collective agenda amongst all stakeholders on priorities for community development and impact mitigation.
